Neurobiology of emotional trauma

An emotional trauma may induce a cascade of neurobiological events that have long-lasting consequences even altered gene expression. Early abuse and neglect can deregulate the child’s developing neurobiological system by reducing its resistance to stressful events, leading to later problems of emotional regulation. Children who have been subjected to physical or emotional abuse tend to pay more attention to signs that contain anger and are hypersensitive to threat. Scar hypothesis […]

Intentionality and Emotions

Researchers use the terms “emotion” and “intentionality” with different meanings. There are distinctions between the functional emotion state, its conscious experience, our ability to attribute emotions to others, our ability to think and talk about emotion, and the behaviors caused by an emotion state. For phenomenologists, affective intentionality is an embodied and enactive process that connects the person to a shared world. For Freeman all actions are emotional having at the […]

Seasonality and time-related aspects of suicides in Greece: an applied time-series analysis

The background that underlies each committed suicide varies among people and constitutes a complex structure of psy- chological, behavioural and biological risk factors that may be triggered by external conditions. Recent studies have shed new light on the association of suicides with particular days and periods of year, in an attempt to resolve the inconsistencies met in literature regarding this relationship. The aim of this study is to look into […]

Is psychosis a dysmyelination-related information-processing disorder?

Numerous lines of evidence implicate myelin and oligodendrocyte function as critical processes affecting neuronal connectivity, which is a central abnormality in schizophrenia. Neurodevelopmental models related to dysmyelination have suggested its relation with different schizophrenia-like symptoms. Post-mortem studies in patients with schizophrenia have reported 14–22% reduction in the density and the quantity of oligodendrocytes. Several myelin-related candidate genes have been linked oligodendrocyte and myelin dysfunction with […]

Is psychosis, at least in part, an immune-related dysmyelination disease?

Epidemiological studies have borne out the association between psychotic disorders and autoimmune disease, while the immunogenetic contribution in psychosis is largely dominated by the major histocompatibility complex genetic diversity. On the other hand, demyelinating diseases, like multiple sclerosis, are characterized by a large array of invading immune cells that degrade the myelin sheath, the myelin producing oligodendrocytes and the nerve itself. Schizophrenia has been proposed to be a dysconnectivity syndrome, […]

Is lithium a universal inhibitor? Evidence arising from clinical neuroscience and oncology

Lithium has been in the environment from the origin of life, interacting with almost all of the biological molecules that life invented. Lithium affects many components of intracellular signalling pathways, inhibiting more than ten cellular tar- gets and displacing magnesium ions. Lithium modulates cell function via inhibitory effects on adenosine triphosphatase activity, cyclic adenosine monophosphate, and intracellular enzymes. Lithium is also an important inhibitor of the en- zyme glycogen synthase […]

Clinical neuroscience and mental health: filling the gap

Recent developments in neuroscience can help inform clinicians› understanding of cognition, emotion, behavior, and social interactions—all critical aspects of people›s lives that are dramatically a!ected in psychiatric disorders. Psychiatry is informed by a broad range of basic biological and social sciences and has at its disposal many tools, like brain imaging, genetics, neuropsychopharmacology, neurophysiology, epidemiological models, and neuropsychology, for developing new assessment and treatment approaches, grounded in understanding […]

Is impulsivity in part a lithium deficiency state?

Lithium mechanisms of action are related to the function of many enzymes, hormones, vitamins, and growth factors. In humans, lithium treatment has been associated with humoral and structural evidence of neuroprotection, such as increased expression of antiapoptotic genes, inhibition of cellular oxidative stress, synthesis of brain-derived neurotrophic factor, cortical thickening, increased grey matter density, and hippocampal enlargement. Lithium, in pharmacological doses, has been used successfully in treating bipolar […]

Is there a connection between lithium induced hypothyroidism and lithium efficacy in bipolar disorder?

Hypothyroidism, more commonly subclinical, appears a common abnormality, while the hypothalamic-pituitary-thyroid (HPT) axis abnormalities are quite common among patients with bipolar disorder. On the other hand, lithium has been used successfully in treating bipolar disorders, but lithium influence on the thyroid gland is one of the key side effects in the long-term therapy. Lithium administration leads to a decrease of production and release of thyroid hormones, which results […]
